On Friday 2 July 2021 we began the Matariki Celebrations. At school we held a hangi dinner and disco to welcome on the Maaori New Year.
To begin the evening we had a Kaikoohau, an expression of hope, for the new year:
Nau mai ngaa hua, Nau mai ngaa pai, Nau mai kia nui, Kia haawere ai
(Welcome all things grown, Welcome all things good, May they be plentiful and abundant.)
Then we shared an abundance of kai, a hangi prepared by some of our parents right here at school. Over 150 meals were served on the night. Following kai, we celebrated with a disco in the hall across the road, where the theme of Matariki continued.
